Committee on Promotional Development of Degree of Pocahontas
Long Beach, 1979
The Degree of Pocohontas is a women’s auxiliary founded by and exclusively for white women. It has no historic affiliation with Native Americans. The group’s traditions and imagery (such as the cover of this cookbook) pull from racist stereotypes of native peoples. It was not uncommon for fraternal organizations to incorporate fake/imagined Native American customs and that bigotry is on overt display here.
Founded in New York in the 1850s, The Degree claimed to have over 120,000 members by the early 1920s. The group still exists nationally today, though the Long Beach chapter appears to be in-active
