This book was published as a fundraising tool, with recipes compiled by Pasadena resident Maud Mitchell Honberger. 

 

Two of the charitable beneficiaries of this book are still in operation today. The Pasadena Children’s Training Society is one of the largest, private, Children’s mental health and foster care providers in LA County. Now known as the Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services, the organization was Pasadena’s first orphanage in 1902. The orphanage was housed in an old craftsman house at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Del Mar Boulevard.

 

The Pasadena Day Nursery was founded in 1910 to care for the young children of working parents in Pasadena/Altadena and also still exists.   

 

In addition to recipes, this cookbook features several advertisements including one for A.C. Vroman book, stationary, and photographic supply store (still a beloved, independent Padadena retailer) and one for “The Magic Electric Suction Cleaner,” which I’m guessing was an early vacuum cleaner. 

 

Recipes include Egg Balls to Drop in Clear Soup, Artichoke Buttons and Caviar, Lobster Cutlets, Cucumber Sauce, and Carmel Cake
